Catalina Restaurant

Catalina is one of Australia’s great destination restaurants situated on a landmark Rose Bay site on Sydney Harbour’s eastern foreshore. “In a city blessed with more than its fair share of iconic dining locations, Catalina is one of the best and not afraid to flaunt it.”- SMH Good Food Guide. Catalina is seven kilometres by road, or a spectacular five kilometre Ferry/Water Taxi/boat ride from the CBD. Rose Bay Wharf is a short walk away.

Rose Bay was the site of Australia's first international airport. From 1938, flying boats, including the famous Catalina's ruled the skies. In 1957, local identity Jim Bendroit built a restaurant and nightclub called Caprice, jutting out over the water. Caprice captivated Sydneysiders for years and was the hottest spot in town.

After the heyday of the Caprice era and years after the last of the big flying boats had flown out, the McMahons extensively renovated the building with architect Leigh Prentice. The restaurant was designed as homage to the beauty of Sydney Harbour. Diners have a panoramic view of Sydney Harbour at water-level, punctuated only by the comings and goings of a working harbour and incoming commuter sea planes based in front of the restaurant.

Catalina is one of only a few restaurants in Sydney whose kitchen remains open from midday to late. Diners are welcome all day (full menu available).

Michael and Judy McMahon opened Catalina in 1994 with a simple goal: to be Sydney’s favourite place to eat the best by the water.

Catalina's fresh and authentic menus are inspired by the classics - French, Italian, Spanish and Mediterranean. Seafood is a Catalina specialty. Oysters are shucked to order, and long-standing relationships with Sydney's leading suppliers provide us with the best line-caught fish. The menu reflects a love of the food of Spain and Italy, translated into a distinctly Australian style, using premium seafood, meats and poultry from around Australia.

And Master Sushi Chef Yoshi Fuchigami produces standout Sushi and Sashimi Wednesday through to Sunday.

Michael McMahon was a protegé of the late Australian wine legend Len Evans, and has had more than 35 years exposure to the great wines of the world. The wine list at Catalina has a truly global appeal. It is as important as the food, the service or the view.

Sommelier Paul Heath works with Michael to ensure the Catalina wine list is one of the most comprehensive in Australia. The list carries more than 800 wines, representing Old and New World, with a minimum of 30 wines available by the glass.

Sydney's most beautiful veranda is also Catalina’s bar area. A great meeting place with a delicious selection of bar food and an extensive cocktail and wine by the glass list (weather permitting).

Catalina has a dedicated, experienced function co-ordinator who consults closely with the client, is creative and personable, and gives complete attention to every detail.

With a spectacular 180 degree Sydney Harbour views, Catalina has played host to some of Sydney’s most spectacular private and corporate events. All functions feature restaurant quality food derived from Catalina's a la carte menus, and impeccable, professional high-ratio service.

Catalina regularly hosts smaller sit down groups from 13-50 people in areas within the restaurant itself. Tables are grouped together; menus, place cards and wines organised; and clients' needs individually assessed and accommodated.

Arriving by ferry is a spectacular Sydney experience. Rose Bay ferry wharf is a stone's throw from Catalina. Sydney Ferries operates a loop service from Circular Quay to Rose Bay to Watsons Bay.
